News you can use to save at National and State Parks this Labor Day Weekend.

National Parks

The America the Beautiful – National Parks and Federal Recreational Lands Pass- Senior Pass is a lifetime pass for US citizens or permanent residents age 62 or over. The cost is $10.

This pass provides access to, and use of, Federal recreation sites that charge an entrance fee or standard amenity. The pass admits the pass holder and passengers in a non-commercial vehicle at per vehicle fee areas and will admit the pass holder + 3 adults at per person fee areas. The pass can only be obtained in person at a national park that charges a fee. This pass also provide a 50% discount on some expanded amenity fees charged for facilities and services such as camping, swimming, boat launch, and specialized interpretive services. In some cases where Expanded Amenity Fees are charged, only the pass holder will be given the 50% price reduction.

This information and more is available at the National Parks web site located at: http://www.nps.gov/fees_passes.htm.

State Parks

Like national parks, most state parks have discounts for older adults.

The discounts for seniors can vary from state to state. Some states require that you purchase a pass which can be used at all of the parks, while others offer a discount on the entrance fee, which you can obtain when you arrive. Be sure to bring an ID with proof of age with you. Some states may require that you are a current resident of that state to receive the discount, but it is uncommon.

Frequent use passes or annual passes can be purchased at most parks that charge admission, but also check the park’s web site for information on purchasing these passes online, through the mail, or via a toll free number.

State parks that offer passes usually only charge a nominal fee for the initial purchase. Once you have the pass, admission is either free or discounted. Passes may also provide discounts on other park services, such as cabin rentals, camping, or fishing, but check with the state park beforehand. Not all states offer discounts on their other facilities and services. State Parks that don’t offer a discount pass will usually provide discounts on the entrance fees. These can range anywhere from 25% to 75% off.

To find out the specifics of the discounts available in a particular state, visit that state park’s web site. There you should be able to locate all of the details and restrictions. If you do not see information about these discounts, call or e-mail the local park or inquire about the discounts available when you arrive.

We have provided a list of all of the states and their current senior discounts as well as contact information. The list is a summary of the discounts available and we recommend checking the state’s web site for full details.
