Book Reviews
Date: July 5, 2007
Authors: David Smidt and Elliott Brown, SeniorDiscounts
This week, we’re highlighting books that
stand out as great sources of information on how to make the most of your lifestyle. While
there are many resources online, these books may offer more in-depth strategies for having
fun, planning ahead, and (of course) hunting down senior discounts.
Unbelievably Good Deals and Great Adventures
That You Absolutely Can’t Get Unless You’re Over 50, 2007-2008, by Joan Rattner Heilman.
This book provides many tips for saving money
for the physically active and travel-oriented senior. It is well-organized and gives tips for
big and small budgets alike. The book focuses primarily on those discounts related to travel
and its widespread offerings can be used to do adventurous things near home, as well as when
you’re on the road. Heilman also includes information on clubs and travel programs that can
help you increase your savings.
The Savvy Senior: The Ultimate Guide to
Health, Family, and Finances for Senior Citizens, by syndicated columnist Jim Miller.
Jim Miller has turned his column into a
comprehensive guide to aging. Covering topics from social security to estate planning to
grandparenting and avoiding scams, Miller brings together his sense of humor and knowledge
to create an informative guide. Though his tone is sometimes light, the information he
brings to the table is always useful. This book is a great place to start if you find yourself
confronted by a myriad of questions about aging and your future.
Retirement on a Budget, by John Howells.
John Howells’ book provides seniors with
information for retiring comfortably. This guide includes information on topics such as;
tapping your equity, affordable retirement locations at home or abroad, qualifying for
Medicare and Medicaid, finding fun and low-cost recreational and cultural opportunities,
mobile home and RV living, trimming utility bills, and thriving as a single in your retired
years.
Invent Your Retirement: Resources for the
Good Life, by Art Koff
Art Koff has created a “user-friendly”
guide for those preparing for retirement. The book touches on subjects such as; where to
retire and how best do it, keeping fit both mentally and physically, working in retirement
or creating a new home business, becoming computer savvy, protecting your credit, estate
planning, assisted living, long term care and social security.
When researching books to purchase,
particularly those on senior discounts, be sure to check the publishing date, as the information
in these books can be out of date in a couple of years.
