United Airlines Quits Silver Wings Plus
Date: May 30, 2007
Author: David Smidt, SeniorDiscounts

Over the past years, we have seen many airlines change or adopt new policies for their senior discount programs. This is largely due to the competitive prices now available through online travel web sites. While Budget airlines entering the market may have helped to lower the ticket costs for many, they have also contributed to the changes in many carriers’ senior programs.

United Airlines is now making a major change and will be discontinuing its senior discount program Silver Wings Plus. Starting on July 1, 2007, Silver Wings Plus will no longer offer annual memberships and will no longer activate, renew or extend annual memberships.

What was the Silver Wings Plus Program?

The Silver Wings Plus program was open to all people 55 years of older for an annual fee. The amount of the fee depended on the level of membership, but started at $25. Members had access to Zone Fares for domestic and international destinations. These fares divided destinations into zones. Members could fly within their zone for as little as $191 round-trip or travel to the next zone for slightly more. Members also received travel credits, and discounts with other travel partners.

What does this mean for Current Members?

United Airlines will be providing refunds for the unused portions of current memberships. Members can choose from a cash refund or opt for bonus miles or other perks provided by United. Members who do not choose a refund option by May 31, 2007, will automatically be provided a cash refund and will have the amount credited back to the credit card on file.

Current members can redeem existing travel credits through June 30, 2007 for domestic or international travel through the Silver Wings Plus travel desk. After June 30, 2007 travel credits will be converted to electronic certificates which can be use through United’s web site. All travel credits must be redeemed, and travel completed by June 30, 2008.

If you joined Silver Wings Plus before September 2005 or are a lifetime member, United will continue to provide those members will access to special zone fares, but you must contact United directly and use your current Silver Wings member number.

If members need to make any changes to current itineraries or for those made after July 1, 2007, and booked with Silver Wings, contact the airline, car rental company, hotel, or cruise line directly.

For more information you can contact United’s Silver Wings Plus program at 1-800-720-1765, or visit the web site for all of the information.
