Ghostly Savings Part 2 – Grocery Discounts for Halloween Preparations

Here are some tips to help with the cost of stocking up on candy and other goodies for those little ghosts and goblins.

Most grocery stores only offer a senior discount on a certain day of the week, but if that day falls just before Halloween, it can mean some good news and great savings. Sure enough, grocery store discounts usually occur at the beginning of the week, most often on Tuesdays, and are available just in time for you to prepare for little visitors on Wednesday.

You can expect to receive about a 10% discount at most grocery stores. Some stores may offer even more substantial discounts on their own store branded items. If you plan to entertain adult trick-or-treaters this year, restrictions may apply to products like alcoholic beverages and tobacco products, but it never hurts to ask.

Here are a few examples of discounts offered at some national and regional chains, but don’t forget to check with your local grocer. Many co-ops and family owned grocery stores provide the best discounts.

Bi-Lo Grocery Store – Located in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Save an extra 5% with the Senior Bonuscard every Wednesday.

Foodland – Some Foodland Stores offer a 5% senior discount one day a week. The day of the discount, discount amount and age requirement varies for each store.

Fry’s Food & Drug – Located in Arizona, shoppers 55 or older save 10% on the total food bill on the first Wednesday of every month. Must be a member of the Fry’s VIP Club.

Harris Teeters Grocery Store – Located in the Southeast US. Shoppers 60+ save 5% on groceries every Tuesday. Not all stores participate.

Kroger Grocery Stores – Typically a 5% discount on Tuesdays for shoppers 55 and older. Day, age requirement, discount amount and store participation vary.

Meijer – Meijer offers a Senior Discount Day featuring 15% off general merchandise. Senior Discount Days usually occur weekly, generally on Monday or Tuesday. Check at your local store for details.

Price Chopper – Customers 60+ receive special discounts and offers with the Senior AdvantEdge program. Visit a local store or the web site for details.

Ralph’s Grocery Store – Located mainly in California, seniors 60+ save 10% on Ralph’s Private Label Products.

Shop N Save – Located in the Midwest, many locations offer a 10% discount one day a week. Check with a local Shop N Save for participation and information.

Wild Oats Natural Marketplace – There is a 10% discount one day a week. Day, age requirement, discount amount and store participation vary.

We hope these discounts help save you some money this Halloween. Just don’t eat too much candy.
