For many of us, groceries can be one of the greatest household expenses. The average U.S. household spends 13% of its budget on food according to a 2005 report from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. But with a little research and well-timed trip to the store, you may be able to cut 10% from your annual grocery bill using senior discounts, (a list of stores that offer senior discounts is included below). These discounts can add up to hundreds of dollars in savings.

It can be difficult to locate a grocery stores’ senior discount policy, as most stores do not advertise or post their senior discounts prominently. Included in this article is some general information about what you can expect from the potential savings at grocery stores as well as any restrictions and age requirement you may encounter. A list of some of the regional and national stores that provide senior discounts is also provided.

National vs. Local Stores:
While there are a few national grocery store chains that do offer discounts at all of its locations to seniors, it is the smaller, local specialty stores, regional chains, franchised stores, and co-ops that are more likely to offer a senior discount. These local stores have more flexibly in establishing their pricing policies may be competing with the larger stores for your business.

Discount Amount:
Grocery stores usually have a low-mark up on their goods so expect to find discounts of 5% to 10%. Certain products are typically not included in most supermarkets’ senior discounts. These products include prescription drugs, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, gift cards and certificates.

Availability:
Discounts are almost always offered either one day a week or one day per month, as stores are trying to attract shoppers on their slower days. There are some exceptions as some stores offer discounts every day. You will find that the most common days for a senior discount are Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Age Requirements:
As always, the age requirements can vary by store, some begin at the age of 50 or 55, but are most commonly offered at 60 or 62.

Discount Continuity:
Be aware; just because one grocery store location offers a senior discount, this does not mean that other locations under the same banner with offer the same discount or any discount at all. Many grocery stores are franchised, thus it will be up to the individual store owner to decide whether to offer a discount.
