Are you the type of person who waits as long as possible before going to get your hair cut or do you schedule your next hair appointment before leaving the salon? Either way, there may be some potential savings available to you. The only requirement is that you may need to have some gray hairs.

Where to Look:

There are a handful of national salons and hair care services that do offer discounts to seniors. These salons typically provide basic services and market to customers who are interested in a good haircut at a reasonable price.

Local barbers and salons may be the better place to find a discount while providing some extra services and a personal touch. Locally owned hair stylists rely on repeat business and great service to keep their chairs occupied and thus tend to be willing to offer discounts so you keep coming back. Don’t count on the high end salons to provide senior discounts.

You may also want to try local beauty or barber colleges and schools. Many of these institutions will provide heavily discounted or free hair cuts and salon services to customers to help educate their students.

Discount Amount:

Discounts start at 10% and go up from there. Customers are paying more for the service than for products or overhead; so many discounts will be in the 20% range.

Availability:

The national chains tend to offer a senior discount everyday of the week, but local salons may only offer discounts on certain days to fill their schedules on otherwise slow days. Tuesdays are the most common, but some places offer discounts every weekday as the weekends are busier.

Age Requirements:

As always, the age requirements can vary by location, but usually begin at the age of 60.

Some Tips:

Next time you go for a haircut at one of the national chains, try calling in advance. Many locations will allow you to put your name down on their waiting list so you don’t have to wait as long when you arrive.

Here are a few examples of discounts offered at some national chains:

Great Clips
Customers 65 and older receive a $1-3 discount off of the regular adult price for a haircut. Check your local Great Clips for more information.
