Senior Discounts at Shopping and Outlet Malls
Including Specific Discount Days and Age Requirements
Author: David Smidt, SeniorDiscounts

There are some discount alternatives for those national retail chains that do not typically offer a senior discount on a nationwide basis. These discounts can be found at shopping and outlet malls. You may not have realized, but many shopping and outlet malls across the United States have senior discount days at most if not all of the stores in the particular center. That means that while your favorite store may not have a corporate senior discount in place, its stores that are located in an outlet or shopping mall might.

These “senior days” usually occur once a week, with the most common senior day occurring on Tuesdays. Some locations may only offer monthly promotions. Expect to save around 10% off at participating stores, this can be in addition to any existing sale prices, but it will be up to the individual stores to decide how much of a discount to offer. Some stores may opt to offer a free gift or a two-for-one special to seniors on a particular purchase instead of the typical 10% discount.

The age requirements for these mall discounts can vary. Some may begin as early as 50 years of age while others may not begin until 60. Malls may also require that you visit the malls’ front office to receive a discount card or certificate to redeem the discounts. Other malls simply ask that you provide identification at the particular stores when you make your purchase.

Most malls have web sites where their senior deals can be found, but don’t assume that a mall doesn’t have a senior discount program just because it is not stated on its site. Call the customer service desk or inquire at the main office next time you visit. Some stores in a mall may offer senior discounts even if the mall does not have a senior discount program in place.

Two of the largest chains of outlet malls that offer a senior discount are the Premium Outlet Malls and Mills Outlet Malls.

Premium Outlet Malls, with more than 58 locations in 30 states, provides a 50-Plus Shopper Club. Shoppers 50 and older receive an added 10% savings on Tuesdays by simply presenting photo identification to the cashier at participating stores. You can find participation stores at the malls’ web site.

The Mills Outlet Malls, with 16 locations, provides senior discounts at some of its outlet locations. There is no formal program and not all malls participate, but many offer a 10% discount on Tuesdays at participating stores.

Another chain of outlet malls. Craig Realty Group, which operates 17 outlet malls in the United States, provides senior discounts days at many of its locations. Discount days are usually on Tuesdays and good for shoppers 55 or 60 years of age and older depending on the outlet. Discounts are usually 10% off at select stores within the outlet centers.

Horizon Group Properties, with 8 outlet locations, offer discounts of 10% to 20% every Tuesday. Participation, age requirement and discount amount may vary by each individual store, but age 55 and older seems to be the most common age requirement at the participating outlets and stores.

Happy Mother’s Day and Happy Shopping.
