Preparing for Cinco de Mayo and Mother's Day at a Discount

In recognition of Cinco de Mayo, here are some discounts that could help you take that Mexican vacation and in honor of Mother's Day, we have some discounts that may help save some money on that card or gift for that most special person in our lives.

Mexico can be a great way to escape without spending lots of money and there are many airlines which offer senior discounts on travel to this warm country. Mexicana Airlines offer a senior discount to those of us 62 years of age and older. The company would not specify the exact amount of the discount since the amount of the discount can vary depending upon the time you travel and destination, but expect to save around 10%.

America West will extend its senior discount to travel to Mexico. Seniors 65 and older receive around a 10% discount on most fares. They no longer extend the offer to a companion of any age.

Continental Airlines also has senior fares available to people 65 and older. Like Mexicana, it does not have a fixed discount amount published on its web site, but be sure to ask about the senior fares next time you travel with Continental.

Other airlines that travel to Mexico and provide senior discounts are United Airlines, ATA Airlines and Delta. Visit our web site search page and search under the category "airlines" for all of these airlines' senior discount information.

Remember, just because you are traveling in another country does not mean there are not senior discounts available. Most US companies which do business in other countries will extend their senior discounts to US citizens while traveling abroad. Check hotels, cruise lines and car rentals for their senior discounts next time you travel abroad. Happy Cinco de Mayo.

Picking out the perfect card or gift for the mothers in our life can be a difficult prospect, but you may be able to save some money while you are at it. Just don't tell mom.

Factory Card and Party outlets offer a discount to seniors every Wednesday. People 55 and older can receive 10% off the purchase of most items in the store. Not all stores may participate and the age requirement and discount amount can vary, so it is a good idea to check on the store's senior discount policy in advance.

Many Hallmark stores also offer a senior discount. These stores are typically franchised, so it may be up to the individual owners whether they provide a discount or not. Most Hallmark stores we have seen will extend a 10% discount on regularly priced items to seniors 55 and older. Like the Factory Card and Party Outlets, it is best to inquire in advance about the particular store's senior discount.

Longs Drugs offers 10% on all Hallmark products, Longs Brand products and Longs One Hour Photo Processing to seniors 55 and older, while Rite Aid provides 10% off Rite Aid brand products every day and 10% off most other items every Tuesday to shoppers 60 and older.
