Get "Cultured" for Less
Date: March 24, 2006
Author: David Smidt, SeniorDiscounts.com

Are you at a loss for something to do over the weekend? Many of us may forget that there are various museums, theater programs and music concerts available in most every city. Add a senior discount to one of these events and you can have a great time for less money.

Visiting museums is a great way to spend an afternoon or a weekend morning. Whether you want to spend some quiet time admiring art, or take the grandchildren to the natural history or science museum, there will almost certainly be a senior discount available.

Like most senior discounts, the age requirements for museum discounts vary. The most common age requirement is around 60 years of age, but there are some that begin as low as age 50. Expect discounts that range from saving a couple of dollars to 50% off the regular admission price. Many locations may even have free admission for seniors of a certain age or on certain days of the week.

Senior discounts can also be found on attractions within museums. For instance, IMAX theaters or gift shops may have a separate senior discount, usually around 10%. If you are unable to locate the discount on our web site, try the museum's own web site as it will most likely have senior rates listed.

You don't have to live in a big city to enjoy the theater or opera. Most cities have local theater groups which perform on a regular basis and many of them offer discounts to seniors. In fact, the smaller, local theaters typically have the best senior rates. Discounts are often 10% to 30% off the regular ticket price and age requirements tend to be lower than those for museums. Larger theaters and opera houses will usually list senior ticket prices on their web sites, while small or local theaters may not, so you should call in advance. The discounts may vary for each show, so don't assume the discount will be the same throughout the entire season.

The Symphony Orchestra is a wonderful way to spend an evening. Senior discounts can be found at many of the major venues throughout the country. Discounts can range from 10% to as much as 40% off, depending on the show. The exact amount may not be posted on the web site. Many times, seniors are required to call to receive the special rate, as they may not be available through the web site. The age requirements for these discounts are usually a bit higher, around 62 years off age.

Enjoy the show. To search for museums, theaters, and music in your area, go to the Discount Search Form located on the SeniorDiscounts web site, click here.
