Grocery Stores

For many of us, Thanksgiving dinner is traditionally one of the most elaborate meals of the year, requiring the purchase of lots of groceries. The cost of groceries can add up, but if you do a little research and time your trip to the store, you may be able to save some money.

While some national grocery store chains do offer discounts to seniors, we have found that it is the smaller, local specialty stores that are more likely to offer senior discounts. Shoppers will typically find discounts of 5% to 10%, but they can be as high as 25%. Certain products are typically not included in most supermarkets' senior discounts. These products include prescription drugs, alcoholic beverages, tobacco products, and gift cards and certificates.

A senior discount is almost always offered either one day a week or one day per month, but there are exceptions as we some stores offer discounts every day. The most common days for a senior discount are on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, perfect timing for the Thanksgiving holiday. These discounts usually begin at the age of 55, but may not start until 60 or 62 so check with your local store.

Here are a few examples of discounts offered at some regional chains:

Fry's Food & Drug - Located in Arizona, shoppers 55 or older save 10% on the total food bill on the first Wednesday of every month.
Bi-Lo Grocery Store - Located in Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee. Customers 55 and older receive a 5% discount every Wednesday.
Harris Teeters Grocery Store - Located in the Southeast US. Shoppers 60+ save 5% on groceries every Tuesday.
Ralphs Grocery Store - Located mainly in California, seniors 60 and older save an extra $1 on their grocery bill with each $10 purchase on Ralphs Private Label Products.
Wild Oats Natural Marketplace - There is a 10% discount one day a week. Day, age requirement, discount amount and store participation vary. Call your local store for details.
Kroger Grocery Store - Typically a 5% discount on Tuesdays for shoppers 55 and older. Day, age requirement, discount amount and store participation vary. Call your local store for details.

To search for grocery stores go to the Discount Search Form located on our web site and search within the RETAIL category, click here. We are always looking for more grocery store discounts. If you know of any in your area, please tell us on our Senior Add a Discount page, click here.

Turkey Facts

Turkeys have heart attacks. When the Air Force was conducting test runs and breaking the sound barrier, fields of turkeys would drop dead.

Turkeys can drown if they look up when it is raining.

A wild turkey has excellent vision and hearing. Their field of vision is about 270 degrees.

A turkey can run at speeds up to 20 miles per hour. They can also burst into flight approaching speeds between 50-55 mph in a matter of seconds.

Benjamin Franklin wanted a turkey to be the national bird.

The best times to find turkeys are on warm clear days or in a light rain.
