America West Airlines

America West has modified its senior discount without a lot of publicity. A visitor to our web site has told us about a very recent change to the America West senior discount, which we appreciate.

America West never publicly changed its senior discounts policy and we have seen no news about it. The only notice was on its web site. This new change could in part be do to the recent merger between US Airways and America West, as US Airways offers no senior discounts. Let's go over the old offer first and than we will let you know about the changes.

America West's previous Senior Discount:
America West offered a 10% discount on most fares to passengers age 62 and older along with one companion of any age. Also for passengers 62 or older, America West offered a Senior Saver Pack which included four one way coupons, good for coach travel on America West and America West Express flights within the United States and from the United States to Canada or Mexico. Flight coupons could be transferred to a maximum of two children, ages 2-11, when accompanied by a Senior Saver Pack holder. Senior passengers had to present proof of age in the form of a driver's license, passport, state-issued identification or birth certificate when the ticket was issued and as requested at boarding points.

America West's new Senior Discount:
As of September 9, 2005, America West no longer offers the Senior Saver Pack. Its web site states that it will continue to accept the Senior Saver Pack coupons 1 year from the date of issue. Travel is good on America West and America West Express, reservations are required 14 days in advance, and there is no minimum stay. To make reservations and to see the full list of terms and restrictions, visit their web site. Click here.

After speaking with a couple of representatives, we still do not have all of the answers regarding America West's 10% discount availability. According to the reservation area of its web site, seniors can qualify for senior discounts at the age of 62 or older, but after calling the reservations department, they tell us the requirement is now 65 years of age or older. It still provides a senior discount on many of its markets, but there is no standard rate and you have to check the web site or call the reservation department to see if a discount applies to your trip and how much you may save.

We will be sure to let you know of any new developments in the senior discounts offered by both America West and US Airways.
