The Savvy Senior

Although we typically like to bring our readers information about senior discounts every week, we also want to inform you about other resources that are available to help you save money and which provide relevant news and facts.

This week we are highlighting a useful resource that can help answer questions facing the aging population every day. The Savvy Senior is a question-and-answer weekly newspaper column that channels useful information and valuable resources to the growing senior population and the families who support them. Jim Miller, creator of the Savvy Senior column, is published in more than 400 newspapers across the country and has over 18 million readers.

Miller was a stadium announcer for the University of Oklahoma's football and basketball teams when his parents died in October 2000 within three weeks of each other. To help him cope with his grief, Miller began working at a retirement community in Norman, OK.

While working at the retirement community, Miller started writing a Q&A column for senior citizens in the local newspaper, "The Norman Transcript," and the response was immediate. He then realized that there was a need for to-the-point information for older Americans.

The Savvy Senior is a great resource for seniors who have questions about issues such as; Social Security, Health Care, Senior Nutrition, Senior Activities, Computers and Technology, Retirement, Investing, Education and Veterans Benefits. You can ask questions on his web site at or you can write him at Savvy Senior, PO Box 5443, Norman, OK 73070. You can also see a list of newspapers and magazines that feature his column and sign-up to get the new Savvy Senior e-newsletter (starting in November).

Jim Miller is also the author of a new book, "The Savvy Senior, The Ultimate Guide to Health, Family and Finances for Senior Citizens and Care Givers." This book is a full service resource guide for senior citizens and contains information on many different programs and services available to senior citizens, as well as the need-to-know basics of Medicare, Social Security, estate and retirement planning, senior health issues, care giving, grandparenting, senior housing options and much more. National Debt Facts

The U.S. public debt, commonly called the national debt, is the amount of money owed by the United States federal government. This does not include the money owed by states, corporations, or individuals.

In Fiscal Year 2005, the U. S. Government spent $352 Billion on interest payments to the holders of the National Debt. Compare that to NASA at $15 Billion, Education at $61 Billion, and Department of Transportation at $56 Billion.

The interest expense on the National Debt is the third largest expense in the federal budget. Only Defense and income redistribution (The Departments of Health and Human Services, HUD, and Agriculture) are higher.

The debt can also be measured as a fraction of the nation's gross domestic product (GDP); at present, US public debt is about 65% of the GDP, a rather average level when compared to other nations.
