Correction: Last week we said the answer to the question: "What category hurricane was Katrina when it reached the United States?", was category 4. The actual answer was category 1, as this was the strength when it hit Florida first. We apologize for the misinformation and would like to thank all of you who wrote in and corrected us.

Challenge Section: Only two more weeks to enter the current Add A Discount Challenge for $100. Scroll down for more information on this new challenge and others.

Crafts and Hobbies

Recently, one of our readers asked about discounts on fabrics. With the holidays just around the corner, we thought this would be a good time to discuss senior discounts available at fabric and crafts stores.

As many of you may well know, Jo-Ann Fabrics and Crafts stopped offering its senior discount at the beginning of this year. While it used to offer people 55 years of age and older a discount on Wednesdays, they have told us that they have replaced the senior discount program with their preferred customer coupons program and will honor competitor's coupons as well.

Just because Jo-Ann Fabrics no longer offers a senior discount, does not mean there aren't others who do. Hancock Fabrics offers shoppers 55 and older a 10% discount on the 1st Wednesday of each month. This discount can not be combined with any other discounts or used to purchase gift cards. The discount is also only available in stores and is not available on their web site at

We have yet to locate any other national chains of craft and hobby stores that offer a senior discount, although we are contacting many of them and working on establishing senior discounts at their locations.

You probably will find the best senior discounts at local craft and hobby shops. Many local craft and hobby stores across the country will offer a 10% discount for seniors, either on a particular day of the week, or you may be able to find senior discounts available every day. These local shops tend to have low age requirements, typically 55 years of age or older.

Here are some stores that provide discounts through our SeniorDiscounts Card program: Family Thrift Center in El Paso, TX; Thrift Land in Austin, TX; Urban Renewals in Allston, MA; and Family Thrift Center in Fort Myers, FL. All of these locations provide a 50% senior discount on most items in their stores every Wednesday. Looking Back Antiques in San Dimas, CA will also provide a 15% discount on all items every day of the week to SeniorDiscounts Card members.

If you know of a discount that we don't, let us know and you could be legible to win $100, click here.

Hurricane Rita Facts
(As of Sept. 22)

Hurricane Rita strengthened into a Category 5 storm as it moved across the Gulf of Mexico toward Texas and Louisiana, surpassing the power Katrina.

Rita has winds of 165 mph (265 kph), putting it in the highest intensity level on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Rita's reach may extend from northeastern Mexico, along the Texas coast, and east of the western half of Louisiana.

Category 5 storms have winds of 156 mph or stronger. Such storms can blow down trees and shrubs, completely destroy mobile homes and cause major damage to lower floors of buildings near the coast.

Since record-keeping began, only three Category 5 storms have hit the U.S.: one that hit the Florida Keys in 1935; Hurricane Camille, which hit Mississippi in 1969; and Andrew, which devastated southern Florida in 1992.
