Southwest's Rapid Rewards

Last week we discussed the senior discounts offered by Southwest Airlines and its new online availability. If you would like to read last week's newsletter, please visit our Newsletter Archive located on the SeniorDiscounts web site. Click here.

Southwest has also made some other recent changes. This does not affect the senior discount per se, but we thought it would be important to mention.

At the beginning of this month, Southwest announced changes to its Rapids Rewards program. Some of the changes are good while others may make it more difficult to locate available seats reserved for Rapid Rewards ticket holders.

As of August 10, 2005, all Rapid Reward credits now have a life of 24 months instead of the previous 12 months and existing credits will be valid for an additional 12 months. Along with the extended time to use the Rapid Rewards, Southwest has also eliminated blackout dates on award availability. This will begin on February 10, 2006.

These changes should be welcome to Southwest travelers and should make it easier for them to earn credits and use them whenever they like. There is a drawback though; Southwest has also made changes to the number of seats available for Rapid Reward credits. Awards issued after February 10, 2006, will have added seat restrictions for free travel. Travelers will no longer be assured a seat with their Rapid Rewards credits as long as there is an empty seat available. Southwest will decide how many seats will be available on each flight and may not offer any seats on certain flights. So while you may have more time to use your credits and no restrictions on when you can apply them, the limited number of seats for Rapid Rewards travelers may be a major hindrance.

Rapid Rewards fliers will need to begin booking their flights earlier to snag those reserved seats and although there are no blackout dates, there may be limited seats, if any, during holidays and busy traveling times.

Next week we will look at a senior discount offered by Delta's Shuttle Service and how it could benefit you.
