Gardening 2nd Edition

Last week we discussed some tips on how to locate senior discounts on garden supplies at both local and larger retail stores. If you would like to see last week's newsletter, please visit our newsletter archive page located on our web site. Click here. With Arbor Day just around the corner we will continue with this theme and examine discounts that can be found on tool and yard maintenance, and equipment rentals.

Recently we have had some companies contact us about senior discounts they offer for their yard and tool maintenance services. We have placed these discounts in our database, located in our Local Services category. You can search our database by visiting our web site. Click here. This is a new type of discount for us, so we are still building more information and company listings, but we thought it important to tell you what we have discovered so far.

To our knowledge, there are no national chains that provide these services, e.g. general lawn and yard care, tree maintenance, lawn mower and other yard tool repairs, as well as equipment rentals, with a senior discount. It is the local companies that seem to offer deals for the over 50 population. The businesses we spoke to tend to offer 10% off their services. Age requirements for these discounts vary, but many businesses tell us that if one knows to ask for the senior discount, they will provide the discount without inquiring about a specific age.

One thing to be aware of while researching senior discounts for these types of services, is that price is very subjective. This means that businesses are providing estimates and can vary the price of the estimate easily. Before asking about a senior discount, be sure to ask for a price quote first, then ask if the business has a senior special. This prevents the company from adding 10% to the estimate and then providing the discount from the inflated rate, thus canceling out the savings you would have received.

We would love to hear from all of you about any discounts you may know of for these types of services. You can either nominate a business you think may want to offer a senior discount, or tell us about a business that already does; just visit our challenge page. Click here. You could collect up to $200.

This week we are bringing you some of the discounts available in our SeniorDiscounts Card program. The following discounts and over 125,000 more can be found at Included in each listing is the phone number, address, map of the location and more. Remember - we add more discounts every week.

Do you know of a senior discount that we don't? Tell us and you could win $100.

Last Week's Challenge Question:
What is the largest cash crop in the US?
Challenge Answer:
According to the USDA, the largest cash crop is corn. However, other sources state that marijuana is the largest cash crop. Due to the difficulty of evaluating an illegal substance such as marijuana, these statistics are necessarily only an estimate. We accepted both answers.

Two weeks ago we listed the senior discount details for both Dollar Rent a Car and US Airways. We have learned from some of you that US Airways no longer offers a senior discount. We also discovered that Dollar Rent a Car no longer offers additional drivers for free, although they still provide a Silver Dollar Club for seniors 50 and older.

Thanks to all of you who brought this to our attention.
