Auto Services

Prices at the gas pumps remain high, and while you may be spending lots of money filling up your car, you may be able to save on other services for your automobile. Senior discounts can be found on everything from automobile services to the purchase of a new car.

The most common of these senior discounts can be found at the many national auto service centers throughout the United States. Many Jiffy Lube and Midas Auto Service locations will other a standard 10% discount to customers 55 and older. But since many of the locations are owned by franchisees, the discounts, participation and age requirements can vary from store to store, so it is best to call in advance or ask prior to receiving the work performed on your vehicle. Some locations may offer more or less than the standard 10% discount and may not extend the discount to parts. You may also notice differences in the age requirements for the senior discounts. Some may require that one be only 50 years of age, others as old as 60 or 62.

There are also many local auto repair shops which offer a senior discount. These discounts can include a percentage off parts, labor or both. Most discounts will save you about 10%, but they can be substantial if you need a lot of work done. These discounts usually begin around the age of 55, but could also require an age as high as 65.

Many Saturn dealerships will also offer a 10% discount on parts and service to seniors 55 and older.

Some regional tire stores also offer senior discounts. For instance, STS Tire and Auto Centers on the East coast have a Sliver Club for people 55 and older. Members receive a 5% discount on tires, services, and accessories, including those which are on sale.

Check your local car wash for discounts as well. You will probably not find any senior discounts available at self service car wash stations, but the full service stations may offer 10% off. We have many discounts for car washes that offer senior discounts located on our web site.

If you a crack or nick in your windshield you may be able to receive 10% off on repairs. We have not seen many senior discounts for new windshields, but there are many local windshield repairs shop which offer discounts up to 10%.

There are even some car dealerships that will provide senior discounts on the purchase of a new or used car. We have not found many of these yet, but they do exist.

Most of these discounts will not be highly advertised so be sure to ask if they have a senior discount available before you have the service performed or purchase the parts.

Olympic Winter Games Facts

Anders Haugen (USA) waited 50 years to receive his bronze ski jumping medal. Deprived of his third place because of a marking error, Haugen won his case and obtained his medal aged 83.

In the 1928 Winter Olympics, the 50km cross country race took place in freakish weather conditions. At the beginning, the temperature was 0° Celsius (32° Fahrenheit); by the end it had risen to 25° Celsius (77° Fahrenheit). Per Erik Hedlund (SWE) was the only competitor to conquer the conditions. His winning time was more than 13 minutes faster than any of the other skiers.

Eddie Eagan (USA-bobsleigh and boxing) achieved a unique feat by winning gold medals in both summer and winter sports. In 1920, he won the light-heavyweight boxing championship. Twelve years later, he reappeared at the Winter Olympics and won the four-man bobsleigh event.
